The Colt .45s win when game is cut short due to fog

On June 30 , 1962 –The Houston Colt .45s walk off with a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati, cut short due to fog. The Reds must have thought they’d entered some Biblical plague what with the heat, humidity, a blinding fog and those Texas-sized mosquitoes. It is so thick that the outfielders can’t see home plate. A six-run rally puts Houston on top early. The shortened contest allows Houston’s skipper Harry Craft to get to the hospital in time for the birth of his first daughter.

In the first game of a doubleheader, Giants right fielder Don Mueller hits for the cycle in team’s 13-7 victory over the Pirates at the Polo Grounds. ‘Mandrake the Magician,’ who homers in his final at-bat to complete the deed, will be the only major league player to accomplish the feat this season.

The Giants obtain their first Japanese player since 1964 when Masanori Murakami became the first ballplayer from Japan to appear in a major league game. San Francisco trades starting pitcher Shawn Estes (9-8, 4.02) to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo (.267, 10, 56) and infielder Desi Relaford (.302, 8, 36), who will be traded the Mariners for David Bell.

Avoiding salary arbitration, Matt Kemp (.297, 26, 101) and the Dodgers agree to a rare multi-year offer that will pay the center fielder $10.95 million over the next two seasons. The 25 year-old Oklahoman, considered a core player in the team’s future, won the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger awards playing for the National League West champs last season.
