Also, an American flag patch will be worn on the jackets of 28 major league teams this season and as well as distinctive logos for Opening Day, Memorial Day weekend, and the Fourth of July, with Canadian versions designed for the Blue Jays and Expos.

The Dodgers edge the Angels, 4 – 3, in 10 innings but not before California executes an unusual play. After the Dodgers’ Adrian Beltre triples off the newly-renovated RF fence in the bottom of the 10th, the Angels move LF Darin Erstad to the infield to prevent the run scoring. Erstad, playing at about second base, throws out Kevin Elster for an OF assist. Jim Leyritz then singles in the run.

Randy Johnson strikes out 13 batters in 6 innings, but gives up 6 runs – 3 earned – in losing to Detroit, 6 – 2. Frank Tanana is the winner. It is Johnson’s 8th loss in a row, the longest losing streak for an American Leaguestarter this year.
