The Cubs continue their hot start with a 5 – 3 win over the Reds in their home opener at a revamped Wrigley Field, improving to 6-1 on the year. However, things don’t look so great for a while as Brandon Finnegan has a no-hitter going until David Ross hits a two-out single in the 7th. Finnegan is taken out of the game and the Cubs feast on the Reds’ bullpen, scoring twice before the inning is over. A three-run homer by Addison Russell off Jumbo Diaz in the 8th seals the win.

1971 – Gary Ross of the Padres balks home Jesus Alou in the 21st inning as Houston outlasts San Diego, 2-1. But wait. That’s just the opener of the scheduled twinbill. After the 5-1/2-hour first game, the California fog rolls in before the second game ends. The Padres win the “nightcap”, 5-4 in the ninth when Ollie Brown, batting after a 14-minute fog delay, sends a shot to right that Jim Wynn can’t find in the mist.

September 24, 1971

Angel Don Baylor ties a club record by knocking in eight runs during a 24 – 2 slaughter of the Blue Jays. The 24 runs the 26 hits are both Angel records. After the first three Jays pitchers are cuffed around, 1B Craig Kusicktakes the mound in his only major league pitching appearance. He does a creditable job, pitching 2 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. No walks or K’s.

August 25, 1979

Brothers Billy and�Cal Ripken, in the first of the two times they will accomplish the feat, both homer in the same game. The siblings’ home runs are overshadowed by�Kelly Gruber’s three run round-tripper in the ninth inning that gives the Blue Jays a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Orioles at the Skydome.
