1960 – In Detroit, Mickey Mantle unloads a cannon shot for three runs in the 6th inning, the ball clearing the RF roof and landing in the Brooks Lumber Yard across Trumbull Avenue. New York pins a 5 – 1 loss on Paul Foytackthat moves them a half game in first place ahead of Baltimore, losers today. In June, 1985, Mantle’s blow will retroactively be measured at 643 feet, and will be listed in The Guinness Book of World Records at that distance.

September 10, 1960

2013 – The Red Sox jump on the Cardinals early, scoring five runs in the first two innings, to cruise to an 8 – 1 win in Game 1 of the World Series. Mike Napoli hits a bases-clearing double in the 1st and the Sox add two more runs in the 2nd in spite of Carlos Beltran robbing David Ortiz of a grand slam with a great catch. Jon Lester pitches 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the win while Adam Wainwright takes the loss.

Craig Biggio becomes the first player since Tris Speaker in 1912 to accumulate 50 stolen bases and 50 doubles in the same season. The Astros second baseman reaches the milestone when he swipes second in the top of the sixth inning in the team’s 7-1 victory over St. Louis in Busch Stadium.
