On June 12 1978, The Cubs send 22 year-old rookie Ron Davis to the Yankees to complete a deal made two days ago which brought Ken Holtzman to Chicago. The trade turns out better for New York when Davis posts a 27-10 (.730) record in as a reliever during his four years in the Bronx, and the 33 year-old southpaw starter Holtzman, in his second stint in Windy City, compiles a 6-12 mark before retiring after two seasons of rejoining the team on the Northside.
In a historic move, major league baseball players end their long-held opposition to mandatory drug testing by agreeing to be tested for illegal steroids beginning in 2003.

The Brewers take a 2-0 lead in their NLDS battle with the Diamondbacks with a 9 – 4 win at home. Both starters struggle, as Zack Greinke gives up three homers for the Brewers, while Daniel Hudson is tagged for 5 runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Brew Crew scores 5 runs in the 6th to put the game away, the scoring starting on Jonathan Lucroy’s squeeze bunt. Ryan Braun leads the attack with a 3-for-4 game including a two-run homer off Hudson in the 1st. Takashi Saito is the winner in relief.

At Atlanta Stadium, Hal Breeden of the Expos becomes only the second major leaguer to pinch-hit home runs in both ends of a doubleheader. On June 17, 1943, Red Sox player-manager Joe Cronin accomplished the feat against the Philadelphia A’s. Expo pinch-hitter Jim Lyttle also adds a homer. Montreal outslugs Atlanta, 11 – 7 in the first game, and the Braves return the favor, 15 – 6, in the second.
