Gaylord Perry, goes the distance, limiting Chicago to six hits in the team’s 8-2 win at White Sox Park. The victory gives the Ranger right-hander the identical career win-loss record (215-174) of his brother Jim, who was released by the A’s in August after getting his final major league decision earlier in the month.

September 21, 1975

At Griffith Stadium, Detroit 2B Eddie Mayo snags a 3rd-inning liner off the bat of Gil Torres to start a triple play. The ball is deflected by P Hal Newhouser, but Mayo grabs it before it hits the ground. It is the second time in a year that Mayo has started a triple play off Torres: in the 2nd inning of the nitecap on July 20, 1945, Mayo grabbed a Torres line drive to start the triple killing.

May 8, 1946

1916 – King Cole, the pitcher who gave up Babe Ruth’s first hit in 1914, dies in Bay City, MI at age 29. Cole was a stellar pitcher while playing for the Chicago Cubs, helping his team to the 1910 World Series.
