The Miami Marlins announce that they are suspending manager Ozzie Guillen for five games for making remarks supportive of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in a recent Time magazine interview. The Marlins decide to act even though Guillen has apologized in order to stem the groundswell of protest from Miami’s large Cuban community.

In the first 1948 East-West Game, the West wins its fourth straight and 7th of the past 8, 3-0. Bill Powell, Jim LaMarque and Gentry Jessup combine on a 3-hit whitewash. Willard Brown becomes the first former big leaguer to appear in an East-West Game.

August 22, 1948

In Philly, the Braves tally 11 hits and three walks but still get shut out by the Phils’ Ray Benge, 4 – 0. In the nitecap, the Braves are hitless until two are out in the 7th, then take the lead, but the Phils tie it in the 9th on Cy Williams’ homer. Boston wins in 11, 4 – 3.
