On July 9, 1968 — Appropriately, pitching dominates the All-Star Game in the first All-Star Game played indoors at the Astrodome. Willie Mays, playing in place of the injured Pete Rose, tallies an unearned run in the 1st inning against American League starter Luis Tiant, Mays, who had been picked off but stayed on the bases due to Tiant’s throwing error, scores an unearned run on a double play ball. Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Ron Reed and Jerry Koosman hold the American League to three hits, for the 1-0 NL victory. Mays is named Most Valuable Player.
