The Nationals slug 8 home runs in a 15 – 2 demolition of the Brewers. The barrage includes a record-tying 5 homers in the 3rd inning, 4 of them hit consecutively by Brian Goodwin, Wilmer Difo, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman. Michael Blazek, making his first career start allows those four long balls, as well as the one hit by Anthony Rendon one batter later that finally chases him from the game. Harper had already hit a two-run shot in the 1st, and Zimmerman and Jose Lobaton both go deep in the 4th to complete the performance. Max Scherzer, who scores on Goodwin’s homer, is the beneficiary of the outburst, winning on his birthday.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts fires general manager Jim Hendry, the man who brought the perennial losers within five outs of the World Series in 2003 and built back-to-back division winners in 2008 and 2009, after 9 years on the job. Hendry’s success was achieved at the cost of a massive payroll, however, and the team is now on the hook for a number of expensive contracts to underachieving former stars, while headed for a second consecutive 5th-place finish. His players send Hendry out a winner as pinch-hitter Tyler Colvin hits a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the Cubs a 5 – 4 win over the Cardinals on his last day. Assistant GM Randy Bushis named to take over in the interim but is not in line to succeed Hendry.

The Diamondbacks provide new manager Kirk Gibson with a vivid display of why they are in last place in the NL West, committing a team record 6 errors in a 14 – 1 loss to the Dodgers, Gibson’s first as a manager. But the most egregious error is courtesy of the winners: in the 2nd inning, Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw is caught going the wrong way on the bases. Standing at first base after an error by Tony Abreu, he goes past second base on a long drive by Rafael Furcal. Thinking CF Chris Young made the catch, he retreats to first base, only to be passed by Furcal, who correctly saw that Young dropped the ball and is running all out. Furcal is out for passing a preceding runner, losing credit for a potential triple.

Alarmed at the increase in home run hitting (1,054 in the major leagues, up from 936), some American League owners back a zoning system setting a minimum of 300 feet for a ball to be called a home run. The motion dies. In another action, the league requires each club to furnish two home uniforms per player, plus extra caps and stockings on the road, to improve the players’ appearance. In National League meetings, Charles Ebbets proposes putting numbers on players’ sleeves or caps. It’s left to each club to do as it wishes.
