In the battle of the Zambranos, the Mets’ Victor is victorious when he defeats Carlos and the Cubs at Shea Stadium, 6-1. In addition to sharing the same last name, the two Venezuelan pitchers, who are not related, also wear the same number (38), enter the game with the same number of career wins (41), play for teams which started the series with the same record (54-54), as well as being both switch hitters and throwing right-handed.

In Pittsfield, a Park Square ceremony celebrates the anniversary of the signing of an ordinance which banned baseball from being played in the park. The 1791 bylaw, passed to protect the windows of the Massachusetts town’s new meeting house, is believed to be the earliest written reference to baseball.

September 5, 2006

At Cincinnati’s Palace of the Fans, 32 year-old Cubs first baseman Frank Chance is plunked by a pitch five times during a doubleheader. In the first game of the twin bill, the future Hall of Famer loses consciousness briefly when one of the misguided pitches hits the ‘the Peerless Leader’s’ head.
