On July 26, 1928 — The Philadelphia Phillies buy left-handed-hitting OF Chuck Klein from the Fort Wayne Chiefs. The 23 year old will go on to have a Hall of Fame career, Spending 15 seasons with the Phillies in total. From 1928 – 1933 he will hit 191 homeruns and bat .359 and win the MVP award in 1930 and finish 2nd in 1929 and 1931.

Smith first covered the New York Yankees for the Hartford Courant in 1983 and later was the main baseball reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1998 to 2007.
