Alex Rodriguez breaks Ernie Banks’ major league record for most in a season by a shortstop,

On September 23, 2001 — The Rangers defeat the Angels, 5 – 2, as SS Alex Rodriguez hits his 48th home run of the year to set a new major-league record for shortstops. He also ties the franchise record for home runs in a season, set by Frank Howard in 1969 and breaks Ernie Banks’ major league record for most in a season by a shortstop, which ‘Mr. Cub’ established in 1957.
