The Red Sox’s Complete Historic Comeback – From 3-0 Down to ALCS Triumph
On October 20, 2004, the Red Sox complete an improbable and historic comeback by defeating New York in Yankee Stadium, 10-3 in Game Seven of the ALCS. The Red Sox win the final four games of the series to become the first team to ever rebound from a 3-0 deficit.
Johnny Damon hits two home runs, including a grand slam in the 2nd inning, backing up the solid pitching of Derek Lowe, and David Ortiz hits a two-run homer in the first inning for the Sox. It’s the second straight season that the Red Sox and Yankees battle to a seventh game in the ALCS.
Boston joins the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders, both of the National Hockey League, as the only teams in the history of North American professional sports to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win a seven-game series.
