On the morning of Opening Day in Washington, DC, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New York Yankees visit Abner Doubleday’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Roosevelt is also scheduled to throw out the first pitch at Griffith Stadium, but the game is rained out and Vice President John Nance Garner will do the honors four days later.

April 17, 1939

at County Stadium, Milwaukee Braves’ right-hander Jim Wilson beats future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts when he no-hits the Phillies, 2-0. The one hour and forty-three minute contest is the only no-no this season, is the first for the “Milwaukee” franchise since the team relocated from Boston following the 1952 season.

June 12, 1954

Major League Baseball approves the sale of the San Diego Padres from John Moores to a group headed by local businessman Ron Fowler, which also includes former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley and pro golfer Phil Mickelson. The sale is for $800 million. In the game that follows, the Padres are shut out by Kris Medlen of the Braves, 6 – 0, as Chipper Jones hits a pair of homers.
