The Red Sox acquire future Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Juan Beniquez, Steve Barr, cash, and a player to be named later. A seven-time 20-game winner, Jenkins will win only 12 games for Boston next season
And two years later, in a successful attempt at self-destruction, Don Zimmer removes the great Fergie Jenkins from the rotation and Mr. Jenkins responds truthfully and accurately with: “I was sent to the bullpen by an ugly, fat, stupid, bald man who knows nothing about pitching.” Zim’s similar moves including Rick Wise and Bill Lee would prove fatal to the 1978 Red Sox.
