On August 6, 1971 — The Yankees kayo Pat Dobson in the 4th, beating the Orioles, 12 – 3. The loss ends Dobson’s win streak of 12 games, his nine consecutive complete games, and his consecutive scoreless inning streak of 23.
In a game which will be best remembered for John Kruk’s non at-bat against fireballer Randy Johnson, the AL All-Stars beat the NL rivals at Baltimore’s Camden Yards, 9-3. As the Phillies’ first baseman flails at the Big Unit’s fastballs in a comical manner, Kirby Puckett’s double and home run earn the Twins outfielder the Midsummer Classic’s MVP Award.

In front of the largest crowd to ever to see a World Series game, 42,300 fans watch the Red Sox beat the Phillies in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, 2-1. The contest, which is played at the National League home of the Braves to accommodate more Boston patrons, ends when Duffy Lewis singles with two outs to score Harry Hopper in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Jason Bay, coming off two of the best career-starting seasons in Pittsburgh Pirates history, agrees to an $18.25 million, four-year contract that covers his arbitration-eligible seasons. In 2004, Bay hit .282 with 26 home runs and 82 RBI in 120 games played while becoming the first Rookie of the Year in club history. He won the award despite missing the first five weeks of the season after shoulder surgery. Bay followed by hitting .306 with 32 homers, 101 RBI, 110 runs scored, 21 stolen bases and a .402 on-base percentage in 2005 despite playing on a team that lost 95 games. He finished 12th in the National League MVP voting after playing in all 162 games.

The cash-strapped Braves send player/manager Rogers Hornsby to the Cubs in exchange for $200,000 and hurlers Percy Jones, Harry ‘Socks’ Seibold, Bruce Cunningham, outfielder Fred Maguire, and catcher Lou Legett. Boston owner Emil Fuchs will replace the “Rajah’, who will hit .380 along with 39 home runs and 149 RBIs for his new club, in the dugout, making him the last person to manage a major league club without any professional playing experience until Ted Turner’s one game foray as a skipper, also with the Braves, in 1977.
