Warren Cromartie, Ellis Valentine, and Andre Dawson formed what Expos announcer Duke Snider termed āthe best young outfieldā heād ever seen in 1977-79. Only Dawson really lived up to Sniderās billing. Cromartie always hustled but was erratic, prone to long slumps, and was not a power hitter. Extremely popular in Montreal, he hit .304 in 1981 as the Expos won their only division title, then skidded to .254 in ā82.
After being platooned in ā83,Ā Cromartie decided to make a change, On December 28, 1983, the then-30-year old Cromartie signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Tokyo, Japan. Cromartie was perhaps the most prominent American player still in his prime to sign with a Japanese baseball team. Cromartie spent seven seasons with the Giants, he hit over 30 home runs in each of his first three seasons. In 1989, he had a .378 batting average with 15 home runs and 78 RBIs and was named MVP of the Central League. In 1991, he returned to Major League Baseball, playing with the Kansas City Royals where he hit .313 in limited action. Cromartie was the manager of the Japan Samurai Bears, an all-Japanese team in the independent U.S. Golden Baseball League which existed for one season.
