Warren Spahn fires 31st career shutout narrowly misses no hitter

August 1, 1953 – At County Stadium, In the fourth inning, speedy Richie Ashburn slapped a high-bouncing ball to shortstop Jim Pendleton, then was ruled safe on one of those too-close-to-call plays that only slow-motion video can resolve. Ashburn was the only Phillies runner to reach base, depriving Braves ace Warren Spahn of a perfect game. The Braves won by a score of 5-0 Spain’s 31st career shutout.

Pendleton also collected 2 hits and Eddie Mathews swatted his 33rd Homerun of the season for the Braves.
