The Blue Jays deal twice, first sending OF Travis Snider to Pittsburgh for P Brad Lincoln and then dispatching another OF, Eric Thames, to Seattle for P Steve Delabar. The Cubs are also busy, trading C Geovany Soto to the Rangers for AA P Jacob Brigham, and P Paul Maholm and OF Reed Johnson to the Braves for Ps Arodys Vizcaino and Jaye Chapman. Finally, the Dodgers acquire P Brandon League from Seattle, for prospects Leon Landry and Logan Bawcom.

At the annual Rule 5 Draft, OF Victor Reyes is the first pick, by the Tigers from the Diamondbacks, but after that it’s a pitching smorgasbord as 15 of the other 16 players taken in the major league phase are pitchers. The most recognizable names are Ps Burch Smith and Albert Suarez, who both have major league experience, and former major league OF Anthony Gose who is hoping to make it back to the Show as a pitcher.

American League President Will Harridge overturns umpire Cal Hubbard’s decision to award the Yankees with 9-0 forfeited victory over the Red Sox, ordering the contest to be replayed from the seventh inning. The Red Sox fans, protesting the deliberate outs New York was making to take advantage of the 6:30 Sunday curfew, had thrown a barrage of garbage onto the playing field which made it impossible to continue the Fenway Park contest.

September 17, 1939

For the second time this season, the Blue Jays have matched their all-time longest winning streak by getting their 11th straight victory, 4 – 2 over Oakland. They had a similar streak in June and are the first team since the 1954 Cleveland Indians to have two winning streaks of at least 11 games in the same season. Mark Buehrle improves to 13-5 and Ryan Goins hits a three-run homer off Jesse Chavez.
