2019 – The Blue Jays make a couple of trades, first sending 2B Eric Sogard across the diamond to their opponents for today’s game, the Rays, then after the game dealing their ace, P Marcus Stroman, to the Mets in return for two prospects, Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson. That last trade raises some questions, as the Mets are also out of the race, but seemingly could not resist acquiring a top-notch starting pitcher for at relatively low cost.

On a rainy mid-week afternoon in Manhattan, Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor Tyler Stanger die as their four-seat plane crashes into an Upper East Side high-rise building. Manny Acta, the Mets third base coach, is not sure he will be able to go to his home after tonight’s scheduled Game 1 of the NLCS at Shea Stadium, due to damage to the Belaire Condominiums caused by the crash.

2005 – Roger Clemens and the Houston Astros agree to an $18 million, one-year contract. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, agrees to a deal that makes him the highest-paid pitcher for the fifth time, following deals with the Boston Red Sox in 1989 ($2.5 million) and 1991 ($5.38 million); with the Toronto Blue Jays before the 1997 season, and with the New York Yankees in 2000 ($15.45 million).
