When Jamie Carroll is caught off first base by White Sox pitcher Ehren Wasserman’s fake throw to third and gets into a rundown, David Dellucci, the runner on third, breaks for home and scores on first baseman Paul Konerko’s throw in the dirt, which also allows Carroll to reach second and Grady Sizemore, the runner on second, to move to third base. Chuck Murr, official scorer of the Indians’ 8-2 victory over the White Sox, credits all three runners with stolen bases, making it the first triple steal to be accomplished since 1987 when Atlanta pulled it off against Houston.

Danny Rios of the Yakult Swallows is served with a one-year suspension for positive steroid tests in May and June. He is the third player to be suspended under Nippon Pro Baseball’s steroid policy (following Rick Guttormson and Luis A. Gonzalez) and the second to be suspended for a year. Rios was only 2-7 a year after having won the Korea Baseball Organization MVP award. The KBO never tested Rios for steroids when he pitched in that league. Rios, like Gonzalez, played in the majors before going to Japan.

The Nationals add another run in the top of the 9th, but Tyler Clippard coughs up a three-run pinch homer to Mark Teahen in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extra innings. Washington then blows one-run leads in the 10th and 12th innings before putting up a four-spot against Matt Thornton in the 14th to win, 9 – 5. Collin Balester picks up his first victory of the season as Washington wins its 12th game in its last 13.
