On July 6, 1990, Whitey Herzog resigns as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals after 10 years on the job. Former Cardinal skipper Red Schoendienst will replace Herzog on a temporary basis until Joe Torre is hired as a full-time replacement on August 1.
