On August 17, 1973, At Shea Stadium, 42-year old New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays hits the 660th and final home run of his career off Cincinnati Reds lefty Don Gullett. Third-string catcher Hal King belts a pinch-hit homer in the top of the 10th inning giving Cincinnati a 2 – 1 victory.

The Mets first baseman, who played 21 seasons roaming the outfield for the Giants before coming home to New York last season, is third on the all-time home run career list behind Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (703). Mays will retire after the Mets fall to the Oakland A’s in the World Series.
