Carl Taylor’s walk-off grand slam caps a five-run rally, giving the Cardinals a dramatic comeback victory over San Diego

On August 11, 1970 — With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Carl Taylor’s walk-off grand slam caps a five-run rally, giving the Cardinals a dramatic comeback victory over San Diego, 11-10. The pinch-hitter delivers his ‘sayonora slam’ on the first pitch he sees from Ron Herbel.

Taylor was surprised. “I hit the ball off the end of the bat,” said the righthanded swinger. “I thought it might be another one that would just reach the warning track.” “I hit a lot of those in batting practice so many that the guys rib me about it. I just don’t go for home runs.” Especially when the bases are loaded. That was the first grand slam I’ve ever hit anywhere,” said Carl. “Even in the Little League.” The shot that cleared the left-field wall by about two feet was his sixth home run of the season. And Taylor wasn’t the only Redbird player who was stunned when it happened. Joe Torre was on third base at .the time, a result of having gotten his fourth hit of the game earlier in the inning. . “For a second I wasn’t sure whether the game was over I had to start counting,” said the Cardinals’ catcher. “But then I remembered that the tying run had been on first base. The scene at home plate was a wild one, of course, with “Cardinals storming around Taylor to congratulate him. “There was a lot of spiking going on in all the confusion,” Torre said. “Jose Cardenal spiked me and I know I spiked somebody else. But who cares?”
