World Series Champions: MLB World Series Historical Winners and Highlights

The Los Angeles Dodgers may have been the pre-season favorites according to MLB World Series betting odds, but it was the Houston Astros who went on to win the 2022 World Series, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in five games. With the win, the Astros became the 21st team with multiple World Series honors. But they have a lot of catching up to do to catch the New York Yankees, who are way ahead with 27 titles.

Now that the 2022 MLB season is over, we thought to take a trip down memory lane to highlight key World Series events and past winners.

1903: The National League and the American League finally resolve their differences and agree to merge for a postseason series to crown the Major League Baseball Champion, a best-of-nine Championship matchup between the NL and AL champions.

1905: The NL champion New York Giants refused to play against the 1904 AL Champions Boston Pilgrims. As a result, plans for an inaugural World Championship Series were shelved. However, in 1905, the World Series was born and has been held every year since, except in 1994, due to a player strike. Excluding 1919 to 1921, when it was a 9-game series, the World Series has been a 7-game series between the NL champions and the AL champions.

1921: The New York Yankees swept the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 to claim their first-ever World Series title. They would go on to collect 26 more titles, more than any other team in MLB history

1949-53: The Yankees became the first and, so far, the only MLB team to win five World Series titles in a row.

1955: Brooklyn Dodgers’ Johnny Podres became the first recipient of the inaugural World Series MVP Award

1956: Yankees’ pitcher Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in World Series history against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It is the only no-hitter spun by a solo player in World Series history.

1969: The New York Mets appeared in their first World Series where they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 to claim the title. This made them the first expansion team in MLB history to appear in, and win, a World Championship.

1992: The World Series made its first abroad debut as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2. It was also the first time a team based outside the United States won a World Series title.

2001: The World Series schedule stretched into November for the first time ever.

2003-16: World Series home-field advantage was given to the winner of the MLB All-Star Game

Sox prevailed in back to back years ending 86 year droughts.

2004 – Red Sox beat the Cardinals for the first title since 1918, the year they traded Babe Ruth

2005 – The Chicago White Sox end the Black Sox course the following year beating the Astros.

2016: The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908, ending a 108-year drought, the longest in World Series history.

2020: World Series was played at a neutral ground for the first time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Los Angeles Dodgers defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in six games.
