On July 17, 1950– At Yankee Stadium, New York Yankee 21-year-old rookie Whitey (Ed) Ford wins his first major league game, beating the visiting Chicago White Sox, 4 – 3. Tom Ferrick finishes for New York. Hank Bauer leads the way going 3-3. The big blow however was delivered by Yogi Berra, with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 7th, Berra delivers a 2 run double scoring Phil Rizzuto and Hank Bauer. The Rookie Ford tried to give it back to the White Sox allowing a leadoff homerun to, Chico Carrasquel, then he pitched himself into a 2 out bases-loaded jam when Ferrick relives him and strikes out, Marv Rickert.
Ford goes 7.2 giving up all 3 runs, striking out 3, and walking 3, he will go 9-1 during his Rookie season.
