A group of Yankees that also included Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, and Bill Skowron had gathered at the New York popular night spot to celebrate Billy Martin’s 29th birthday in May when the infamous altercation occurred with a group of patrons, resulting in unwanted newspaper headlines for the storied franchise.

Said Bob Fishel Yankee publicity director: “We made no announcement of the fines at the time, and we are making no announcement now We feel It is a club matter,” Fishel said of the players concerned: “Since the incident, they have conducted themselves to our satisfaction” Hank Bauer Whltey Ford Yogi Berra Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin were fined $1000 each and Johnny Kucka $500 for participating in the Copa affair Martin’s fine reportedly was refunded when he was traded to Kansas City in June.
