Yogi Berra wins the 1951 American League MVP

On November 8, 1951 — In one of the closest votes in the history of the award, Yogi Berra wins the 1951 American League MVP.

Berra hit (.294, 27, 88) the Yankees catcher, edges out the Browns’ 20-game winner Ned Garver, who was told he had won the award by a representative from the BBWAA before a recount gave the Bronx Bomber backstop a slight edge.

Over seven years 1950 – 1957, Berra will win 3 MVP Awards and finish no lower than 4th in any of these seasons and from 1947 – 1961, Berra appeared in every MVP balloting.
