Kitty Burkegrabs Babe Herman’s bat as he comes to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and bats vs Paul Dean

Kitty Burke, an avid Reds’ fan annoyed at Ducky Medwick’s retort to her heckling by telling her she couldn’t get a hit if she were swinging at an elephant, grabs Babe Herman’s bat as he comes to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, comes on to the field demanding a turn at bat. After some consternation, Cardinal pitcher Paul Dean complies by tossing the ball underhanded to the popular local nightclub blues singer, who grounds out to the pitcher, much to the delight of the cheering crowd.

Two American League pitchers each hit two home runs in a game. Wes Ferrell clouts a couple against Buck Newsom of the Browns and knocks in four runs in a 6 – 4 win for Boston. Mel Harder hits two for Cleveland but loses, 6 – 4, to the White Sox. No other hurlers will hit two homers this season.

Reds bat out of order but Cub’s still win

7/27/1935 – In the first game of two at Wrigley Field, the Reds started the top of the fifth with the pitcher due up. Instead, the batter at the top of the lineup, short stop Billy Myers, hit instead and singled. According to the next day’s Chicago Tribune, the “radio announcers caused quite a commotion in an effort to arouse [manager Charlie] Grimm, but to no avail.” Lew Riggs then stepped to the plate and once a pitch had been made to him, it was too late to protest the hit by Myers. Riggs struck out, Myers stole second and Babe Herman singled to left with Myers moving to third. Now Grimm came out to protest the batting out of turn – two batters too late! The Tribune’s account said: “Umpire [Cy] Rigler suggested to him that it might aid his pennant drive if he would try reading a rule book.” Jim Bottomley then knocked in the run that should not have scored. However, the Cubs swept the double header, so only marginal damage was done by this event.

Ed Linke starts a 1-2-6 double play when Yankees outfielder Jesse Hill’s line drive, that caroms of his head, is caught by catcher Jack Redmond, who relays the ball to shortstop Red Kress to double up Ben Chapman at second base. The Senator right-hander will be hospitalized for two days after being carried off the pitcher’s mound on a stretcher.

1935 – The Red Sox end a game for the second consecutive day with pitcher Wes Ferrell hitting a walk-off home run. As a pinch-hitter yesterday, his round-tripper beat the Tigers, 7 – 6, and as today’s starter, his game-ending homer earns him a 2 – 1 victory against the Browns.

The Cardinals extend their winning streak to 14 games, beating Boston, 13-3, behind the five-hitter tossed by Paul Dean, and the offensive output of Burgess Whitehead and Ripper Collins, who each collect four hits in the Redbirds’ 18-hit barrage at Sportsman’s Park. The fourteen victories mark the longest stretch of games without a loss in franchise history.
