1967 – Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher Billy Rohr makes a memorable debut by no-hitting the New York Yankees for eight and two-thirds innings. Elston Howard spoils Rohr’s masterpiece with a two-out single in the 9th, but the Red Sox still win, 3 – 0. Despite his impressive debut, Rohr will win only two more games in his major league career.
On April 13, 1967, future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver makes his major league debut for the New York Mets. The 22-year-old right-hander allows six hits in five and a third innings and picks up a no-decision in the Mets’ 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
On Opening Day at Boston’s Fenway Park, the Red Sox draw only 8,324 to watch the team beat Chicago, 5-4. The eventual American League champs finished last season in ninth place with a 72-90 record.
1967 – Eddie Mathews beats his old Atlanta teammates in a 6-1 Opening Day victory. The Braves had traded their aging star to Houston that winter and he responds with two hits including a triple off Dick Kelley to key a six-run sixth inning. Mike Cuellar picks up the win.
Al Jackson, competing for a spot in the Cardinals’ rotation to replace an injured Steve Carlton, yields twenty hits over nine innings in an exhibition game. The southpaw’s poor outing comes against the Tulsa Oilers, the Redbirds’ Class AA minor league team in the Texas League.
