The Yankees, five years after the Mets bestow the honor to their first skipper, retire Casey Stengel’s uniform #37, during Old Timers Day at the Stadium. The ‘Old Perfessor’, who won seven World Series during his twelve-year tenure with the team, managed the Bronx Bombers from 1949 to 1960.

For the second and last time in his career, Lou Brock steals home, teaming up with Joe Hague on a double steal in the 1st inning against the Mets in St. Louis. Nelson Briles wins, 3 – 0, stopping Tom Seaver’s nine-game win streak.

At Minnesota, George Mitterwald leads off the bottom of the 14th with a home run to beat California, 2 – 1. Stan Williams (7-0) wins with two innings of work; Williams will be 10-1 for the year, all in relief.

In San Diego, the Reds stomp the Padres, 12 – 1.

In their last meeting of the year, Baltimore defeats Kansas City, 10 – 8. It is the Orioles’ 23rd straight win over the Royals over a 2-year span, a major league mark.

Bobby Tolan of the Reds celebrates his new son, born just before today’s game, by driving in the winning run in the 11th inning to beat the visiting Cubs, 4 – 3.

After attending a tryout camp, Frank White is signed by the Royals as an amateur free agent. The 19 year-old infielder, one of the few successful graduates from the Baseball Academy the team operated in the early 1970s, will play his entire 18-year career in Kansas City, having his number retired by the franchise in 1995.
