On July 22, 1975 — At Shea Stadium, Jerry Koosman steals second base, his first career steal and pitches a complete game in a 3 – 1 New York Mets victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Mets got off to a 1-0 lead against Reds’ starter Jack Billingham. Wayne Garrett and Ed Kranepool got first inning singles and Garrett scored on Rusty Staub’s sacrifice fly. The Reds loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the third, but Koosman struck out Johnny Bench to end the inning.
Koosman led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field. As Garrett was at the plate, Koosman started running on a pitch by Billingham. Cincinnati catcher Bill Plummer threw to second, but the ball went into center field for an error. Jerry had stolen second base and easily advanced to third. Garrett followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Koosman with the Mets’ second run. The Mets added to their lead on Garrett’s single to score Mike Phillips in the seventh.
The first-place Reds were held to three hits by Jerry Koosman over the first eight innings but George Foster and Concepcion singled off Koosman to start the top of the ninth. Plummer struck out, but Merv Rettenmund singled to score Foster, ending Jerry’s bid for a shutout. Koosman then got the last two outs to finish off a complete game win that was accented by his own steal of second.
