On April 5, 1977, the New York Yankees acquire shortstop Bucky Dent from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Oscar Gamble, pitcher Lamarr Hoyt and a minor leaguer. Dent will solidify New York’s middle infield and help the Yankees reach the World Series in 1977 and ’78.
1977 – Houston bombs the Rangers in a 16-6 exhibition win in Oklahoma City. Willie Crawford drives in five runs but the moment nobody forgets is when Bob Watson doubles into a double play. Texas catcher Bill Fahey tags out both Enos Cabell and Jose Cruz at the plate.
On April 4, 1977, the Pittsburgh Pirates make a seemingly minor trade that will pay major dividends. The Bucs acquire outfielder Mike Easler from the California Angels for minor league pitcher Randy Sealy. Easler will contribute mightily to the Pirates’ World Championship in 1979.
1977 – An exhibition game with the Texas Rangers in Tulsa, OK, is halted when a part of the stand collapses, injuring 17 people. Players helped carry victims to aid, some making stretchers out of wooden planks.
