On June 20, 1978 – Toronto is defeated for the third consecutive game by a Canadian-born pitcher. The Blue Jays lose to John Hiller of Detroit, after having previously tasted defeat at the hands of Ferguson Jenkins and Reggie Clevelandof the Texas Rangers.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Orioles lose to Cleveland, 6 – 0. John O’Donoghue wins in relief. Mike Adamson makes his major league debut for Baltimore: he is the first draftee to bypass the minors and go straight to the majors, though he’ll play in the minors next year.
July 1, 1967
The Pirates club the Dodgers, 12 – 11, to win the opener of two with the league leaders. Brooklyn chases Howie Pollet and takes a 9 – 2 lead but the Bucs roar back with eight runs in the 7th inning. Clyde King, unscored on in his last eight games, is the loser. The Dodgers load the bases in the 9th, and Murry Dickson walks pinch-hitter Cal Abrams to force in a run and make the score 12 – 11. But Carl Furillo and Pee Wee Reese fail to deliver. Pete Castiglione has two homers for the Pirates. Brooklyn wins the second game, 4 – 3, when Jackie Robinson homers in the 10th, off Ted Wilks. Andy Pafko homers in the 8th, off Bob Friend, and Preacher Roe (17-2) goes all the way.
August 26, 1951
Cleveland scores in every inning against the Red Sox, but playing at home, the team does not bat in the 9th. In the eight innings, they run up an American League-record 27 runs, including 13 in the 6th, for a 27 – 3 win. In three innings, Lefty O’Doul gives up 16 runs on 11 hits and 8 walks. This is his last season as a major league pitcher, but he will return to the major-league in 1928 as an OF. The Indians keep it up, scoring three in the 1st inning of the second game en route to an 8 – 5 win.
