At Shea Stadium, the Mets’ Rusty Staub homers to become the second player to homer as a teenager and also at the age of 40. Ty Cobb is the only other, and Gary Sheffield will match the feat in 2009. Staub’s blast, a two-run pinch homer, climaxes a four-run 9th inning as the Mets beat Philly, 6 – 4.
1984 – Rick Sutcliffe pitches a two-hitter in a 4 – 1 win over Pittsburgh to clinch the National League East title for the Cubs, who will be making their first post-season appearance since 1945. The win is Sutcliffe’s 14th in a row. Sutcliffe strikes out nine Bucs, including Joe Orsulak for the final out.
Tiger closer Willie Hernandez establishes a franchise record when he converts his 32nd consecutive save opportunity, holding New York to one run over two innings in the team’s 4-1 victory in Detroit. The mark will last for 27 years until it is broken in 2011 by Jose Valverde.
1984 – Rookie Jim Traber makes his debut in Baltimore, first by singing the national anthem before the Red Sox game, then by DHing. The Red Sox are unimpressed, clipping the Orioles, 8 – 0. Traber had sung the national anthem a number of times before minor league games.
With a 5-4 victory over San Francisco at Jack Murphy Stadium, the Padres win their first division crown. In addition to winning the clincher, Tim Lollar hits a three-run home run in the second inning to help his cause.
1984 – Phil Garner scorches a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Giants, 4-4. Craig Reynolds finishes the job the next inning with a single off the fence that plates Terry Puhl for the game-winner in a 5-4 triumph. Dave Smith picks up the win.
Tim Raines becomes the first player in major league history with four consecutive seasons of 70 or more stolen bases by swiping four in Montreal’s 7 – 4 win over St. Louis.
The Tigers clinch the American League East championship with a 3 – 0 win over the Brewers as starter Randy O’Neal records his first major league win. Detroit becomes the 4th team this century to be in first place every day of the season, joining the 1923 Giants, the 1927 Yankees, and the 1955 Dodgers.
Harold Baines slugs three home runs to lead the White Sox to a 7 – 3 win over the Twins and drop Minnesota into 2nd place in the AL West.
