Commissioner Fay Vincent orders Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to resign as the club’s general partner by August 20th and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life

In a surprisingly harsh ruling, Commissioner Fay Vincent orders Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to resign as the club’s general partner by August 20th and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life. The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner’s $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield.

Following his first-inning single, a triple in the third, and a fifth frame two-bagger, George Brett hits a leadoff homer in the seventh to complete the cycle in the Royals’ 6-1 victory over Toronto at the SkyDome. Roseanne Barr sings an irreverent rendition of the The Star-Spangled Banner that will be widely criticized

Between games of a twin bill against Cincinnati on ‘Working Women’s Night’ at Jack Murphy Stadium, Roseanne Barr, the star of the hit television show whose executive producer is new Padres’ owner Tom Werner, sings an irreverent rendition of the The Star-Spangled Banner that will be widely criticized, including a remark by President George H. W. Bush, who calls her performance “disgraceful.” The comedian, known for her biting sarcasm, spits and grabs her crotch as if adjusting a protective cup after singing the National Anthem in a loud and off-tune screechy manner.
