Despite solo homers in the 5th by brothers Billy Ripken and Cal Ripken, both off David Wells, the Orioles lose 4 – 3 to Toronto. The Jays score three in the bottom of the 9th on Kelly Gruber’s home run to make a winner of reliever Willie Blair. The brothers Ripken will homer together one more time, in 1996, again in the same inning.

Oakland’s Dave Stewart wins his 20th game of the season, 9 – 1 over the Twins to become the first pitcher since Jim Palmer (1975-1978) to post four straight 20-game seasons.

1990 – Yankees starter Steve Adkins doesn’t allow a hit in his major league debut, but he walks eight batters in just 1 1/3 innings, as Texas wins, 5 – 4. Adkins walks the first three batters, then retires the side. After a fly out in the 2nd, he walks the next five before being lifted, two shy of Dolly Gray’s consecutive walk record.

Coming off his first major league start where he threw seven shutout innings, Mel Stottlemyre, Jr. is roughed up by visiting Toronto, allowing five runs in three frames. The Jays win, 8 – 4, handing Mel his only decision in this, his last appearance. Tomorrow, he can console his brother Todd Stottlemyre, who allows six runs in five innings in losing to the Royals, 7 – 5.

1990 – In the first head-to-head match-up of pitchers named Abbott, Jim Abbott’s Angels beat Paul Abbott’s Twins, 3 – 1. Minnesota’s Carmen Castillo pinch hits late in the game to complete the successful “Abbott and Castillo” revival.

Seattle’s Matt Young strikes out four batters in the 1st inning of a 3 – 1 win over the Red Sox. He’s the 2nd pitcher this year to K four batters in an inning.

Oakland beats New York, 7 – 3, to complete a 12-game sweep of the Yankees this year. The season sweep is a first for the Yankees.
