Former major league slugger and current California Angels hitting coach Deron Johnson dies from lung cancer at the age of 53. Johnson hit 245 home runs during a 16-year career. In 1965, he led the National League with 130 RBI as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

On April 12, 1992, Boston Red Sox left-hander Matt Young pitches eight no-hit innings, but loses a 2-1 decision to the Cleveland Indians. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Indians manage only two hits against Roger Clemens, setting a record for fewest hits in a twinbill.
On April 6, 1992, the Baltimore Orioles play the first game in the history of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The capacity crowd of 44,568 includes President George Bush. The Orioles defeat the Cleveland Indians, 2-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Rick Sutcliffe.
On Opening Day in front of a full house at Seattle’s Kingdome, the Rangers score nine runs in the top of the eighth inning and hold on to beat the Mariners, 12-10. Texas had been trailing 8-3 before the late-inning barrage.
Mets reliever Jeff Innis is credited with the win over the Cardinals in New York’s 4 – 2 Opening Day victory. In 1991‚ Innis became the only pitcher in baseball history to appear in at least 60 games with neither a win nor a save.
Toronto’s Jack Morris sets a record with his 13th consecutive Opening Day start‚ as he goes all the way in defeating the Tigers‚ 4 – 2.
1992 – The Red Sox conclude 27 years of spring training at Winter Haven, Florida, by beating the Tigers, 14 – 4.
The Phillies acquire right-hander Curt Schilling from Houston in exchange for Jason Grimsley, who will never throw a pitch in an Astros uniform. ‘Schil’ plays nine seasons in the City of Brotherly Love, compiling a 101-78 (.564) record, along with 3.35 ERA during his 242 appearances with team.
