2007 – Trevor Hoffman pitches in his 803rd game for the San Diego Padres, breaking the record for games pitched with one club. The prior record had been shared by Walter Johnson and Elroy Face.

On the night in which the ceremonial first pitch is thrown by his three sons, Trevor Hoffman is unable to hold on to a two run lead when the Dodgers score three in the ninth and eventually beat the Padres, 6-5. It’s ‘Trevor Time Desk Clock’ Night, and the usually reliable Padres closer blows the save, thanks to some shady defense, for the second consecutive game.

2007 – Rookie submarine pitcher Yushi Aida gets a win for the Yomiuri Giants over the Yokohama BayStars; he joins father Teruo Aida as the first father-son duo in Nippon Pro Baseball history to both win a game.

Riding as a passenger in a car near San Francisco, 73 year-old Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Halberstam dies in an auto accident. The prolific writer’s books covered various topics in American history, including pennant races (The Summer of ’49), World Series (October 1964), and ballplayers who were lifelong friends (Teammates).

Alex Rodriguez becomes the second player to hit twelve home runs in the season’s first fifteen games when he goes deep twice in the Yankees’ 7-6 loss to Boston at Fenway Park. Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt also accomplished the feat, hitting a dozen for the Phillies in 1976.
