In his second major league start, Alexi Ogando pitches seven scoreless innings in a 2 – 0 win over Detroit and ace Justin Verlander as the Rangers improve their best-in-baseball record to 9-1. Ogando has not allowed a run in 13 innings this year. Miguel Cabrera hits his 300th double, becoming the second major leaguer to tally that many before his 28th birthday (Joe Medwick was the first).

Sam Fuld has the night of his life in his return to Fenway Park, where the New Hampshire native attended plenty of ball games as a kid, getting four extra-base hits in Tampa Bay’s 16 – 5 win over Boston. After hitting a double, a triple and a homer in his first five at-bats, he comes up in the 9th inning needing only a single to complete a cycle, but instead lashes a double into the left field corner against Dan Wheeler. His homer comes in the 2nd against losing P Daisuke Matsuzaka and puts the Red Sox in an early 7 – 0 hole they can never dig out of. Fuld also robs Dustin Pedroia of extra bases with a diving catch in left-center in the 5th. Jeremy Hellickson is the beneficiary of the scoring outburst, recording his first win of the year. Both teams are now 2-8, tied with Houston for the worst record in the majors at this early point of the season.

In the nationally-televised Sunday-night game, the Red Sox shut out the Yankees, 4 – 0, thanks to a dominating performance by Josh Beckett, who gives up only 2 hits in 8 innings while striking out 10. The Red Sox strand 16 baserunners but manage to squeak a run off CC Sabathia on Mike Cameron’s infield single in the 3rd, before tacking on a few insurance runs late in the game. Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon combine to retire the final 17 New York batters in order.

Last season’s American League strikeout leader, Jered Weaver, is at it again, punching out 15 Blue Jays batters in 7 2/3 innings in a 3 – 1 win. He is the first Angels pitcher to strike out 15 since Chuck Finley in 1995.

The Indians win their 7th straight as they defeat Seattle, 6 – 4. Asdrubal Cabrera and Jack Hannahan homer for Cleveland, and Ryan Langerhans for Seattle as Josh Tomlin is the winner over Erik Bedard.

Hiroki Kuroda gets two decisions as the Dodgers sweep a rare southern California doubleheader. In the completion of a suspended game necessitated by four rain delays in San Diego the previous day, Tony Gwynn drives in the winning run in the top of the 11th and Kuroda pitches the bottom of the frame to save the 4 – 2 win. He then starts and wins the regularly-scheduled game, pitching into the 9th inning in a 4 – 0 shutout of the Padres. Jonathan Broxton relieves Kuroda with two out and two on in the 9th; he proceeds to walk Chris Denorfiato load the bases, but the game ends on a rare interference call against baserunner Chase Headley, who collides with 3B Casey Blake as he is attempting to field Cameron Maybin’s ground ball. Broxton has five saves in five outings this season but will soon be lost for the season with an elbow injury.

The catchers did it: Carlos Ruiz hits a pinch grand slam off Scott Linebrink in the 7th inning as the Phillies defeat the Braves, 10 – 2. The Phils’ other catcher, Brian Schneider, starting in place of Ruiz, also homers in the game, good for two runs. Ruiz stays in the game and adds a run-scoring double in the 8th, giving him a personal high of 5 RBI in the game. Roy Oswalt records his first career win over Atlanta.

Jose Tabata doubles off Franklin Morales to end a 14-inning, 5 hour, 11 minute, marathon between the Rockies and Pirates. With the Pirates’ bench and bullpen both depleted, the score tied at 3-all with two outs and Josh Rodriguez on first, Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy declines to issue an intentional walk to Tabata, who hit a solo homer earlier in the game, in order to face P Garrett Olson, and pays the price. The Pirates bullpen puts together a stellar performance: 6 pitchers combine to keep Colorado off the scoreboard for 11 1/3 innings after relieving starter Ross Ohlendorf with a 3 – 0 deficit in the 3rd inning.

The Red Sox finally record their first win of the season after starting 0-6, defeating their arch-rivals the New York Yankees, 9 – 6, in their home opener. Dustin Pedroia hits a homer in his first at-bat with his team down 2 – 0 and finishes the day with 3 hits and as many RBI to lead the Boston attack. John Lackey is the winner in spite of giving up 6 runs over 5 innings.
