Trailing 7 – 2 in the 7th, the Yankees take the lead with a six-run inning, but Boston ties the game in the top of the 9th when Mike Napoli starts a rally with two out and nobody on against Mariano Rivera. Quintin Berry is inserted as a pinch-runner and promptly steals second and moves to third on C Austin Romine’s wild throw, before Stephen Drew’s single drives him in to tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, Alfonso Soriano is thrown out in an ill-fated steal attempt. Jacoby Ellsbury singles and steals second in the 10th before Shane Victorino drives him in for the deciding run. Craig Breslow is the winner over Joba Chamberlain.

Geovany Soto entered the game as the catcher and batted sixth while Engel Beltre entered the game as the new right fielder and batted fifth. Previously, the right fielder had been batting sixth and the catcher fifth. In the top of the ninth, Soto batted in his proper spot and homered. Beltre then came to the plate out of turn (he was before Soto not after) and struck out. Then Soto’s spot was skipped and Jeff Baker struck out (out of turn). Jurickson Profar then struck out to end the game.

This ensures that they will break their record-setting streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons, the longest such streak in North American sports history. Andrew McCutchen hits his 100th career homer in the win, but the celebration is subdued, as the Bucs are focusing on a bigger goal: they now have a two-game lead on the Cardinals in the NL Central.
