For Zimmerman, it is the 10th such home run of his career; for Miller, it’s a first blown save after converting his first 13 save chances of the season.

The Marlins go outside the box in picking a replacement for fired manager Mike Redmond, as General Manager Dan Jennings takes over as skipper. While Jennings has 31 years of professional baseball experience, it is largely as a scout and in front office roles: he has never been a coach or manager at any professional level. In his first game at the helm, the Marlins lose, 3 – 2, to the Diamondbacks in 13 innings as David Peralta drives in the winning run against demoted closer Steve Cishek.

The Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond (155-207), who had his contract extended through 2017 prior to the final game of last season as a reward for Miami improving by 15 victories during his second year at the helm. The 44 year-old skipper, after seeing his team get off to a disappointing 16-22 start, will be replaced by the team’s general manager Dan Jennings, who has never played in the majors and has never managed at any professional level.

Shortly after coming within one out of being no-hit by the Braves’ Shelby Miller, the Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary. Justin Bour singles with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to break up Miller’s bid, but the Marlins still lose, 6 – 0, completing a three-game sweep. Expecting to compete this season, the Fish find themselves with a disappointing 16-22 mark.

Mariner right-hander Felix Hernandez becomes the fourth-youngest hurler to record his 2,000th career strikeout when he whiffs Sam Fuld in the fifth inning of the team’s 4-3 victory against Oakland at Safeco Field. Bert Blyleven, Walter Johnson, and Sam McDowell are the only three pitchers to reach the milestone faster than King Felix.

At Target Field, Jose Bautista hits home runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, contributing to the Blue Jays’ 11-3 victory against Minnesota. The Toronto right-fielder, last season’s homer leader, has clouted four round-trippers in a span of five at-bats, including his last plate appearance in yesterday’s game.

The smokestacks at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, OH get a little hotter than expected, as a fire breaks out during tonight’s Reds game against the Giants. Firemen control the blaze while the game continues and no one is hurt.

Jonathan Singleton of the Fresno Grizzlies drives in 10 runs in a 17 – 6 beating of the Albuquerque Isotopes in the Pacific Coast League. He goes 4 for 6 with two homers, including a grand slam, in setting a new club record for RBIs.

Last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner, Corey Kluber of the Indians, finally gets his first win of the year after starting off 0-5. He strikes out 18 Cardinals batters and allows only one hit over 8 innings to lead Cleveland to a 2 – 0 win. The 18 strikeouts tie a club record set by Bob Feller in 1938 and are the most by any American League pitcher since Roger Clemens also struck out 18 in 1998.
