In Brooklyn, the Dodgers keep a woozy Roy Campanella on the bench, preferring to rest him for the World Series. Rookie Clem Labine ignores Charlie Dressen’s orders to take a full windup, preferring to pitch out of the stretch with the bases jammed in the 1st. Phils 3B Willie Jones then hits a grand slam and Labine ends up in Dressen’s doghouse. The Phils win, 9 – 6, behind Robin Roberts.

September 21, 1951

The American League defeats the National League, 4 – 3, in 15 innings at the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. It is the first extra-inning win ever for the AL after seven losses and one tie. The two teams combine for a record 7 steals, six of them by the American League. The game goes 4 hours and 50 minutes, also a record.

Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch both hit their first major league home run in the 4th inning as Detroit beats the Angels, 10 – 6. Another rookie, Austin Jackson, goes 5 for 5 for Detroit. Sizemore’s dinger follows one by Gerald Laird, while Boesch’s is a grand slam during the 8-run inning.
