June 22, 1962

Al Jackson throws the first one-hitter in franchise history when the Mets beat the Colt .45’s, the National League’s other expansion team, at the Polo Grounds, 2-0. The lone hit given up by the southpaw is Joey Amalfitano’s line drive single to left field in the first inning.

August 14, 1962

Al Jackson goes the distance in the Mets’ 15-inning loss to Philadelphia. The hard-luck lefty, who throws an astounding 215 pitches during the contest, gives up only six hits, but third baseman Mel Roach, who entered the game in the 11th inning as a pinch-hitter, strokes a two-run single in the fifteenth frame that proves be the difference in his 3-1 defeat at the Polo Grounds.

August 28, 1962

Al Jackson limits the opposing batters to three hits, going the distance in the Mets’ 2-0 victory over the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium. The 26 year-old left-hander’s effort marks the fourth time he has blanked the opponents, accounting for all of the expansion team’s shutouts the entire season.

Former Reds outfielder Vada Pinson described this 5’10” Texan as “Very competitive, small, big heart – he knew how to pitch. He fought you every kind of way to help beat you.” Although Jackson went 8-20 for the fledgling Mets in both 1962 and 1965, the gutty southpaw threw all four of the Mets’ shutouts in 1962. His 43 career victories were a pre-Seaver Met high.
