The Braves bring up Andruw Jones. He is believed to be the first player since Phils pitcher Pat Combs in 1989 to start a season in A ball, then play in AA, triple A, and the majors in the same season.

Andruw Jones becomes the fourth rookie in baseball history to hit two home runs in the same World Series game when he goes deep twice in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. The Braves’ center fielder joins Charlie Keller (1939 – Yankees), Tony Kubek (1957 – Yankees), and Willie McGee (1982 – Cardinals) in accomplishing the feat.

Michael Tucker’s two-out double in the 9th breaks up Alan Benes’ no-hitter. Benes, unfortunately, is matched against Greg Maddux, who holds the Cards scoreless for eight innings. The Braves finally push across a run in the 13th on Andruw Jones’ infield dribbler to beat Cardinals reliever John Frascatore, 1 – 0. The teams combine for 33 strikeouts, three shy of matching the National League record for an extra-inning game set by the Giantsand Mets in a 23-inning contest in 1964.

Andruw Jones’s grand slam is the Braves’ tenth of the season, breaking the National League mark for bases-full home runs for a team in single season. Ironically, the record is broken in an American League park as Atlanta defeats the Red Sox at Fenway.

Atlanta has their ticket punched to the Fall Classic when Kenny Rogers issues a base on balls to Andruw Jones with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to force in Gerald Williams with winning run.

Two days after losing a 15-inning, 4 1/2 hour marathon‚ the Braves waste no time in doing in the Twins‚ 11 – 0. Andruw Jones‚ Vinny Castilla and Matt Franco hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the 7-run 5th inning. The Braves last hit 3 straight on April 18‚ 1994. Tom Glavine (11-2) pitches 7 scoreless innings for the win.

The Braves beat the Phillies, 7 – 1, as OF Andruw Jones clouts three home runs and drives home four runs.

Second baseman Marcus Giles hits a home run off Brad Penny’s 3-2 pitch, as the Atlanta Braves tie the National League record by having six players hit at least 20 home runs in a season. But he strikes out in a key ninth-inning situation and the bullpen melts down in a 5-4 ten-inning loss in Atlanta. Andruw Jones’ blast off Ricky Stone is the game-winner.

In a close vote, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America selects Albert Pujols (.330, 41, 117) as the National League’s MVP. The Cardinal first baseman outpoints Braves’ center fielder Andruw Jones, 378-351.

To honor Jackie Robinson, some players on each team, including Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter and Braves’ outfielder Andruw Jones, wear the Dodger immortal’s uniform No. 42 on the 60th anniversary of his historic breaking the color barrier in baseball. In the Cardinals and Brewers contest at Busch Stadium, every player and coach on both teams dons Jackie’s revered number.

The Braves start three players with the same surname – 3B Chipper Jones, LF Brandon Jones and CF Andruw Jones. The last time a team had done that was the 1999 Pirates with Emil Brown, Adrian Brown and Brant Brown. The Dodgers, who had restructured Andruw Jones’s contract earlier in the month, put their expensive center fielder on waivers rather than pursuing a trade for the five-time All-Star. The highest-paid player in the franchise history, who signed a two-year, $36.2 million deal during the 2007 offseason, was a complete bust in his one season with the team, hitting a meager .158 with just three home runs and 14 RBIs in 209 at-bats.

2011 – The Yankees sign OF Andruw Jones to a one-year contract. Jones almost washed out of baseball after a terrible 2008 season that saw him hit .158 with no power, but he has since bounced back to being a useful player again, although his days of stardom are over.

The Rangers tie an American League mark shared with 15 teams by turning six double plays in a nine-inning game, including a record-tying five DPs by Elvis Andrus for the most by a shortstop, in the team’s 5-3 victory at Yankee Stadium. The first six batters in the Bronx Bombers’ lineup, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Andruw Jones, and Nick Swisher, bounce into Texas twin killings.

It wouldn’t be the Yankees without a bit of soap opera. Today, Jorge Posada asks to be taken out of the line-up 40 minutes before the game, after being listed as the 9th-place hitter against the Red Sox. Hitting .165, the DH claims he has a bad back, something which Yankees GM Brian Cashman denies, and after the game explains that he feels “a little bit disrespected”. With Andruw Jones taking Posada’s place, the Yankees lose the game, 6 – 0, to the Sox, with a two-run double by Jacoby Ellsbury and a three-run homer by Adrian Gonzalez against CC Sabathia providing the key blows in support of Josh Beckett’s six scoreless innings. Jones hits 9th in the game, the second #9 hitter in MLB history with 400+ homers to his credit – the prior one was Jimmie Foxx from his days as a pitcher at the tail end of his career.

The Blue Jays open the second half with a bang, scoring 8 runs in the 1st inning of their game against the Yankees, chasing Bartolo Colon after two-thirds of an inning. 3B Eduardo Nunez, filling in for Alex Rodriguez who underwent a knee operation during the All-Star break, commits a costly error that leads to 5 of the runs. The Yankees then close to within 9 – 7, but the Jays victimize the back end of their bullpen in the late innings to end up with an emphatic 16 – 7 win. The 16 runs and 20 hits are season bests for the Jays. Andruw Jones hits two homers in a losing cause, and SS Derek Jeter and DH Jorge Posada appear together in a game for the 1660th time, the all-time record for the Bronx Bombers, beating out Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri. The Jays get a scare when All-Star Jose Bautista has to leave the game in the 4th inning with a twisted ankle, but the injury will turn out to be minor.

OF Andruw Jones, who played for the Yankees last season, signs with Japan’s Rakuten Golden Eagles.
