Joba Chamberlain is knocked out of the game in the 1st inning with a bruised right knee after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Adam Jones. The Yankees still defeat the Orioles, 7 – 4, as Robinson Cano drives in three runs. Alfredo Aceves pitches 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Chamberlain to earn the Bronx Bombers’ 9th straight win.

The San Diego Padres acquire outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for Jody Gerut. Gwynn, who has struggled to stay on a major league roster since making his debut in 2006, joins the team for which his father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, played his entire career and which retired his uniform number 19. Gerut revived his career with a solid season as the Padres’ centerfielder in 2008.

David Ortiz ends the longest home run drought of his career when he connects for the first time this season off Brett Cecil of the Blue Jays in an 8 – 3 Boston win. Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury ties a major league record by recording 12 putouts behind pitcher Brad Penny.

The wife of Diamondbacks pitcher Scott Schoeneweis, Gabrielle, is found dead of a drug overdose at their home, leaving Schoeneweis in sole charge of four children under the age of 16.

Former Korea Baseball Organization batting champion Hae-yong Ma publishes a book claiming many foreign import players and some locals used steroids. The KBO instituted limited steroid testing in 2007 and had no global system due to cost concerns.

The Nationals come back from a 5 – 0 deficit, score a run in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings, but lose 8 – 5 to the Pirates when Adam LaRoche belts a two-run double in the 10th. Washington has lost six straight games, in spite of scoring five runs or more in each contest. With Joe Beimel taking the loss, the Nats’ bullpen is 1-14 for the year.

Dontrelle Willis wins his first game in 20 months and his first in a Detroit Tigers uniform as the Tigers shut out the Rangers, 4 – 0. Willis retires 17 batters in a row at one point and snaps the Rangers’ seven-game winning streak.

Jason Kendall goes 2 for 5 to help the Brewers beat the Cardinals, 8 – 4. He becomes the 8th player to collect 2,000 hits in the majors while playing primarily catcher.

Returning from a strained forearm that has kept him out of action all year, the Angels’ John Lackey picks up his first win of the year in a 10 – 6 victory over Seattle. Lackey actually made his season debut three days earlier but was ejected after only two pitches for throwing at Texas lead-off hitter Ian Kinsler.
