1997 – In the first game of a doubleheader, Milwaukee P Steve Woodard, recalled just that morning, hurls eight innings of one-hit ball to defeat the Blue Jays, 1 – 0. Mike Fetters tosses a hitless 9th for the Brewers. Toronto’s only hit is a double by CF Otis Nixon.
The Detroit Tigers retire Hal Newhouser’s uniform number 16. Newhouser pitched 15 seasons for the Bengals and is the only pitcher to win back-to-back MVP awards, in 1944 and 1945. Following the festivities, the Tigerslose to Milwaukee, 11 – 7, as the Brewers come up with five runs in the 9th inning.
The Braves defeat the Reds, 3 – 2, in Cincinnati, as the temperature on Cincinnati’s artificial surface reaches 152 degrees.
Jesse Ibarra of the Jacksonville Suns hits grand slams from both sides of the plate in a 12 – 9 win over the Memphis Chicks. It is later concluded to be the first Organized Baseball game in which such a feat has occurred. The balls are flying out that day as Memphis’s Shane Monahan sets the Southern League record with his fourth grand slam of the season.
The Reds name Jack McKeon as their manager, replacing Ray Knight.
The Royals acquire 3B Dean Palmer, slated to become a free agent at the end of the season, from the Rangers in exchange for OF Tom Goodwin.
1997 – Brad Radke allows the Athletics just five hits, striking out 10 and walking no one, in a 1 – 0 victory. The game is the gem of what has been a masterful stretch for Radke; he is tied for second in the American League in wins with 13 (Roger Clemens has 16) and his 149 1/3 innings are sixth most in the league.
In Montreal, Vinny Castilla has five hits, including two home runs, as the Rockies out-slug the Expos, 11 – 9. Castilla’s two-run shot off Dave Veres with two outs in the 12th gives Colorado just its third win in 19 games.
Major League Baseball names Toronto executive Paul Beeston as its first president and CEO. The 52-year-old Canadian has been president of the Toronto club since 1991.
