1950 – The Boston Red Sox sell pitcher Jack Kramer to the New York Giants for $25,000. Kramer will charge the Red Sox with railroading him out of the American League because of his differences with manager Joe McCarthy.
1950 – Former Giants Mel Ott and Bill Terry are the top vote-getters, but fail to be elected into the Hall of Fame.
At a Boston sports writers dinner, infielder Bobby Doerr receives the Fred Hoey Award, given by the scribes in memory of the first full-time broadcaster for both the Red Sox and the Braves. The scrappy second baseman’s friend and Boston teammate, Ted Williams, surprises the gathering by attending the event wearing a tie.
1950 – The Pittsburgh Pirates sign high school pitcher Paul Pettit for a record $100,000 after buying his contract from a film producer, who had signed him to an exclusive contract as an athlete/actor. Under Major League Baseball’s “high-school rule”, scouts are barred from doing so prior to graduation. Unfortunately, with an eventual 1-2 career mark, Pettit will prove not to be worth the trouble.
1950 – Jackie Robinson signs a contract for $35,000, reportedly making him the highest-paid player in Brooklyn Dodgers team history.
1950 – The Associated Press picks the 1914 Miracle Braves as the greatest sports upset in the 20th century.

1950 – The Cleveland Indians dismiss coach George Susce when his son George D. Susce signs with the Boston Red Sox.
George Susce is relieved of his duties by Cleveland general manager Hank Greenberg when the bullpen coach’s son declines an offer to sign with the Tribe, deciding instead to play for less money with Louisville, a farm team of the Red Sox. George Jr., who will make his major league debut against the Yankees in 1955, compiles a 22-17 record in 117 games during his five seasons with Boston and Detroit.
1950 – Charlie Grimm resigns as vice president of the Chicago Cubs to sign a three-year contract to manage the Dallas franchise in the Texas League for a record salary of $90,000. Grimm comments, “these hands were never intended to carry a brief case.”
