A new musical, The Curse of the Bambino, opens in Boston. Written by David Kruh with music and lyrics by Stephen Bergman, the comedy is staged as a Greek tragedy complete with a Greek chorus composed of four fans.
Carlos Delgado of the Toronto Blue Jays hits three home runs for the second time this season, as Toronto beats the Kansas City Royals, 12 – 4. On two of the homers, Delgado combines with Raúl Mondesi to go back-to-back, the first time that teammates have twice gone back-to-back in the same game. Delgado hit 3 homeruns vs Tampa Bay during the 3rd game of this young season.
2001 – Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves is almost flawless for seven innings, combining with a pair of relievers to pitch a one-hitter in a 2 – 0 victory over the New York Mets. The Mets wind up with only one runner against Maddux, Mike Remlinger and John Rocker, when Todd Zeile lines a single about a foot beyond second baseman Quilvio Veras’s glove with one out in the 2nd inning.
On April 9, 2001, Hall of Famer Willie Stargell dies at the age of 61. Stargell, who had been in failing health because of kidney problems, played key roles on the Pirates’ two world champions of the 1970s. He hit 48 home runs in 1971 and shared the NL’s MVP Award in 1979. Nicknamed “Pops”…

On Opening Day at Veterans Stadium, Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning’s number 14 jersey is retired. Bunning, who compiled a 224-184 record in his 17-year career pitching for the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers, joins Richie Ashburn (1), Robin Roberts (36), Steve Carlton (32) and Mike Schmidt (20) as the fifth player to have his number retired by the Phillies.
On April 4, 2001, Hideo Nomo of the Boston Red Sox pitches the second no-hitter of his career – a 3-0 whitewash of the Baltimore Orioles. In making his Red Sox’ debut, Nomo becomes only the fourth pitcher in major league history to hurl no-hitters in both leagues, joining Jim Bunning, Nolan Ryan, and Cy Young in exclusive company.
2001 – After 31 years in Three Rivers Stadium, the Pittsburgh Pirates move into their new $262 million home at PNC Park, losing to the New York Mets, 4 – 3, in an exhibition game. The 38,000 seat stadium is nestled at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers with a spectacular view of the city.
