On June 5, 1977, the Dodgers honor former manager Walt Alston by retiring his uniform No. 24 during “Old Timers’ Day” ceremonies at Dodger Stadium. Alston, who had retired after the 1976 season, had managed the Dodgers for 23 consecutive seasons – all on one-year contracts.
Indian right-hander Dennis Eckersley’s consecutive no-hit inning streak ends at 22.1 innings, two-third of a frame shy of Cy Young’s major league mark, when Mariner Ruppert Jones goes deep in the bottom of fifth in the Kingdome contest. The centerfielder’s home run will prove to be the only run Cleveland gives up, coasting to an easy 7-1 victory in Seattle.
Leading by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Orioles escape a no-out, bases-loaded jam when John Wathan hits into a run-scoring triple play to end the game, giving the team a 7-6 victory over Kansas City at Royals Stadium. The Kansas City pinch-hitter’s sac fly to right field (1) is deep enough to score Al Cowens from third base, but Freddie Patek, the runner on first, is caught in a run-down on the throw (2) and Dave Nelson, stranded off third base, is tagged out (3) by Mark Belanger, completing the 9-6-4-6 triple killing.
1977 – Ruppert Jones of the Seattle Mariners hits a home run off Dennis Eckersley in the fifth inning to snap Eckersley’s no-hit string of 22 1/3 innings, just two outs short of the major league record set by Cy Young. The Indians beat Seattle, 7 – 1.

5/28/1977: Butch Hobson lost a homer off Marty Pattin because of a ruling by umpire Terry Cooney. Hobson’s hit in the seventh inning went into the screen over Fenway Park’s left field wall. Unfortunately, it bounced off a light tower and came back onto the field and was ruled in play.
